They say there is no such thing as a new story. Basically, every story has already been told a thousand times: be it the love story, good vs. evil, or the story of revenge. However, what makes each story different is the perspective, the characters, and the voice of the story teller.
Everywhere we turn there is another coach, a healer, a doctor, a lawyer. So the question is how do you, as the teller of your own story, stand apart? How do you take your life experiences, your journey, and weave it into the work you do so that you stand out in your field? Whether it is helping people with relationships, interior design, or financial abundance (like thousands of others) how do you do it in a way that is like no other?
This is the question I ask myself as I look around at all the other speaking coaches. There are many, who like me, have years of experience in theater, or have provided training and leadership. So, what are my unique gifts? What is the swell of experiences that brings my own brand of magic to the work I do?
I come back to the answer again and again – my connection to the earth. For even though I spent over 20+ years as an actor, director and writer, I also spent a good portion of my life as a landscape designer, creating gardens and specializing in sustainable design.
Two years ago I had a life-altering vision. I was walking through a barren valley, and on either side of me were mountains that had been stripped bare and topped. As I walked, I also heard the voices of women crying out for help. It hit so hard, this realization that it is all connected: our treatment of the earth is no different than our treatment of women – careless and often cruel. However, in the problem also lies the solution: as we heal our women, we heal the earth. And as we heal the earth, we will heal our women.
On a regular basis, I will be chatting with a woman about my speaking business and the moment I dip into my previous experience with gardens her eyes light up. In a flash, we are off and running, sharing that keen connection we both feel to the soil, the rivers, the stones. We wax poetical on the potency of women gathering under an oak tree, inhaling the pungent smell of the mountains. Their hearts open as we talk of remembering what we have forgotten and the exquisite joy of finding our way back home.
So I know This is it! This is where I live. This is where I come to life – when I can integrate that sweet piece of me back into the mix. For even as I work with women to claim their voice as Speakers, to shine their light on stage, I know I am also a guide, a reminder of their connection to nature. For in Nature’s glorious arms they will find infinite support, abundance, unconditional love, creativity and joy. And from this connection they they will shine their light, they will tell their story, they will step out strong and true.
I saw it in the vision: as we care for and connect with Her, so we care for and connect with ourselves.
So I invite you this day, to go out into nature – be it the ocean, the mountains, or maybe simply your backyard. Go ahead and take a few deep breaths. As you inhale, gather the sensations of the sun on your shoulders, the whiff of an early spring, the warm breeze on your neck.
And rejoice! For whether or not you are aware – She is always with you.
To your journey.
